« This album is more evidence, if such were needed, that Rameau was not the only fine composer to follow in the footsteps of Lully […] with any number of imaginative touches. […] The vocal items are topped and tailed by Rameau. Véronique Gens brings her expressive powers to Phaedra’s despair; and she is even more powerful in ‘Amour, cruel Amour’ from Zoroastre, a da capo air preceded by a recitative. […] An additional pleasure is a handful of orchestral pieces, none more charming than the Menuet from Rameau’s Acanthe et Céphise, with its rustic oboe and bassoon. The chorus and orchestra of Ensemble Les Surprises provide admirable support under the sure hand of Louis‑Noël de Camboulas. »
